Laia Cabrera is an award-winning filmmaker and video artist and critically recognized multimedia creator, working in the fields of art Installations, new cinema, creating a wide range of artworks, from traditional and experimental filmmaking, visual poetry, virtual theater, interactive art and immersive projection mapping installations. Identity and consciousness have been constant themes in her work, exploring concepts of otherness, symbolism, and hope, the art of seeing and the nature of belonging. Her innovative work explores new ways of using space and the visual imaginary as a tool for narrative storytelling and audience connection, driven by both scenographic and dramaturgical aspects and crafting immersive content experiences.
Her extensive achievements include Telly Awards for Best Direction, Animation, Documentary, and Art Direction, as well as Motion Award and NYIT awards nominations, and recognition in the #Hybrid Vision Panasonic Digital Art Competition. She has received grants and fellowships from institutions like the KrTU Creators Prize, the DC commission on the Arts, JC Arts & Culture Trust Fund among others and her work has been presented worldwide in leading venues, art galleries and festivals.
Her most recent immersive interactive installation "Dream-e-scape” was presented at the film Criticism Forum, Riyadh, KSA, Microwave Media Arts Festival in Hong Kong, and Flutter Experience Art Gallery Los Angeles. “The Now” is the largest video interactive public art installation ever made in New York. “Self on the Shelf” was praised as one of the highlights of Spring/Break Art Show during the Armory Week 2018. Her latest immersive video installation "Qualia, You Matter to Me," was presented at the Prelude Festival NYC, and “Perennial Land” at The Hall of Fame Art Gallery as part of the Care and Climate Change series commissioned by the Mellow Foundation.
Her repertoire extends to groundbreaking large-scale installations like "Aire” presented at the Tempietto di Bramante in Rome, Washington DC and New York, and she has collaborated creating projection designs for over twenty years on award-winning and nominated multimedia shows. Her career epitomizes boundary-breaking artistry, blending traditional and experimental filmmaking in multimedia presentations. Cabrera's contributions redefine visual arts, immersive storytelling, and interdisciplinary collaborations, making a lasting impact on the global artistic scene.
